The Strange Disappearance of Granger Taylor
On this episode of Expanded Perspectives Elite the guys start off talking about how while flying a helicopter off the coast of Tanzania, a low tide created the ideal conditions for a scuba diver to spot strange formations in the water. Now, archaeologists believe they have discovered an ancient lost sunken city, known in the past as Rhapta, which thrived some 2,000 years ago. Then, It’s no secret that feeling positive vibes from people you work with makes the job more enjoyable. But a new University of Michigan study shows a leader’s positive energy has a direct impact on productivity, absenteeism and commitment. People who work with positive energy leaders also do more work outside their official roles, and have more satisfying family lives. Then, between Room 237, Moonwalkers, the Flat Earth Society and other conspiracy theorists, and humankind’s general eagerness to believe anything that sounds strange enough to be true, the idea that Stanley Kubrick helped fake the Moon landings persists. And the director’s daughter is SICK OF IT. Then, on a moonless night deep in a Brazilian rainforest the only thing you are likely to see are the tiny smears of light from flitting fireflies or the ghostly glow of mushrooms scattered around the forest floor. Both effects are the result of bioluminescence, the peculiar ability of some organisms to behave like living night-lights.
Bioluminescence has been “invented” dozens of times in evolutionary history and serves a variety of purposes, from attracting mates and luring prey to warding off predators. Its existence in fungi – a rare if not unique case of bioluminescence outside the animal and microbial worlds – has posed more of a mystery. But scientists may now be able to explain not only why certain mushrooms glow in the dark, but how – and in doing so they could be nearer to creating glowing trees as a novel form of street lighting. After the break Cam brings up the unusual case of Granger Taylor. On the night of November 29, 1980, gale force winds tore through the central portion of Vancouver Island, knocking out the electricity and sending locals scurrying for shelter. In the midst of this violent storm a shy and uncannily bright young man posted a short note on his father’s bedroom door and walked out of his parents’ home leaving all of his worldly possessions behind, including $10,000. He climbed into his 1972, pale blue Datsun pick-up, drove past the flying saucer replica he had built in his backyard and was never heard from again.
