Patient 44170
On this episode of Expanded Perspectives Elite the guys start the show off talking about a robot companion for older people aims to promote activity and tackle loneliness by nudging them to take part in digital and physical activities. A prototype of the ElliQ robot, made by Israel-based start-up Intuition Robotics, will be unveiled at the Design Museum in London this week. ElliQ is a small desktop device that consists of a stylised domed “body” and a separate detachable screen. Created in collaboration with Swiss designer Yves Béhar, the robot is able to tilt and turn to indicate what it is doing and encourage a degree of social engagement. Similar to home assistants like the Amazon Echo, people can simply talk to it, and there are visual cues that could be particularly helpful for those with hearing difficulties. A key purpose of ElliQ is to act as an easy interface to access existing services such as social media, messaging programs, and audio and video streaming. For example, the device could alert the user that their grandchild has posted a new photo on Facebook, show it to them on the screen, and allow them to comment using speech-to-text technology.
Then, a Neolithic standing stone has been discovered in Sicily which has been found to align perfectly with the winter solstice. The stone was found in Gela, a small town on Sicily’s southern coast, when a group of historians and archaeologists were conducting a survey of abandoned World War II bunkers in the area. After radiocarbon dating, this “Sicilian Stonehenge” has been dated to between 3,000 and 6,000 B.C.
Then, A western Kentucky resident has released a video of what he thinks could be a Bigfoot creature. Kirk Stokes, 43, told Cryptozoology News on Tuesday that he was near the Kentucky Lake when he captured the images. “I didn’t notice the animal until I watched the video later on,” Stokes explains. “I was hiking and filming when I captured this from a distance of about 120 yards in thick cover. I heard grunting snorting howls,” he added about the footage. The 46-second-video shows a dark primate-like figure that appears to be hiding away from the man.
Then, have you ever heard of the the Horse Deer. Well you’re not alone, most people haven’t. This deer-like species has been reported for centuries as living around a lake in rural, northwestern China. It has been seen so rarely that it has been considered mythological, extinct, or a case of mistaken identity. Yet locals have insisted that the horse deer is an actual animal. The creature looks like a deer with some of the characteristic appearance of a small horse. It has been more than a decade since a reported sighting has occurred, but now a camera has captured a very clear picture of one such animal.
After the break Kyle brings up the incredible real story of a dead husband and the man who assumed his identity. The Bruneri-Canella case, called in Italian the case of the Smemorato di Collegno, is a notorious judicial and media affair concerning the alleged reappearance in 1926 of a man who had gone missing in World War I. The question of his identity was thoroughly discussed in newspapers and in courtrooms, and endured for almost 40 years. Due to nationwide interest in the case, the term smemorato di Collegno became a common saying since the 1930s, meaning a person who forgets something.
The man was originally identified as Professor Giulio Canella, an Italian philosophy scholar and teacher who had gone missing in action in World War I. His wife, Giulia Concetta Canella, had refused to give up hope of seeing him again. When she saw a newspaper photograph of a man who claimed to have no memory of his past or name, she thought she recognized him. She went to the mental hospital where he had been confined. After a few visits, she became convinced that he was her husband. However, a few days after he was released to her, an anonymous letter was sent to the Quaestor of Turin, claiming that the man was actually an anarchist and petty criminal with an extensive police record named Mario Bruneri. After an inquiry and several trials and appeals, the court found that he was indeed Bruneri.
During that time, the couple had lived together and had three children. After the final verdict was rendered, they moved to Brazil to get away from the scandal. Bruneri died there in 1941. Giulia Concetta Canella tried without success to have the decision overturned. She died in 1977.
