Ed Gein and the Moonlight Murders

Ed Gein and the Moonlight Murders

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives Elite the guys start off the show talking about NASA’s secret Space Shuttle Missions no one really talks about. Then, a registered nurse says she saw a giant bird in Hot Springs County that she claims she was not able to immediately identify. Then, a 16 year old teenager wakes up from a coma speaking fluent Spanish and finally, a spooky story about a little girl seen along the highway in Nebraska.

Just in time for Halloween, after the break Cam brings up some truly scary tales of murder. Like the real life Texas chainsaw massacre and the town that dreaded sundown. Ed Gein was a notorious killer and grave robber. He inspired the creation of several film characters, including Norman Bates (‘Psycho’), Jame Gumb (‘The Silence of the Lambs’) and Leatherface (‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’). Then, the mysterious Moonlight Murders rocked the sleepy southern town of Texarkana in 1946. Police on either side of the state line struggled to work as one while the killings themselves possessed the iconic quality of urban legend. Young couples parked at the end of a lonely country road, savaged after the sun went down.

In fact, some claim that the infamous campfire tale of lovers who catch a report of a hook-handed killer on the car radio only to discover a bloody hook hanging from their back door can be traced to the Texarkana Moonlight Murders. The killer, described by witnesses as wearing a white mask or sack with holes cut for eyes, was dubbed the Phantom Killer or Phantom Slayer—a name that, like so much about the case, seemed ready-made for drive-in theaters. Thanks for listening to Expanded Perspectives Elite! Have a safe and happy Halloween!
