On this episode of Expanded Perspectives Elite the guys start the show off talking about how a company based out of Atlanta, Georgia is going to make hibernation pods for space travel in just the next few years. Then, legends and tales of pig people have been around for centuries. Most of the older stories come from the United Kingdom, but America has had it’s share. One of these stories revolves around the alleged ‘Pigman of Northfield, Vermont.’ It’s a local yarn that has been repeated since the early 1950’s…but interesting nonetheless. And then,in a remarkable—if likely controversial—feat, scientists announced today that they have created the first successful human-animal hybrids. The project proves that human cells can be introduced into a non-human organism, survive, and even grow inside a host animal, in this case, pigs. This biomedical advance has long been a dream and a quandary for scientists hoping to address a critical shortage of donor organs. Every ten minutes, a person is added to the national waiting list for organ transplants. And every day, 22 people on that list die without the organ they need. What if, rather than relying on a generous donor, you could grow a custom organ inside an animal instead?
After the break, Kyle brings up the interesting story of the 1942 Ghost Blimp! On August 16,1942 something very strange happened in Daly City, California, a quiet suburb near San Francisco. Around 11:30 a.m. a sagging Navy blimp descended from the sky and headed for Bellevue Avenue. It perched fleetingly on a rooftop before drifting off and snagging in a tangle of power lines. The blimp sheared through the wires and sent arcs of electricity into the air before coming to rest on the ground. The engines were smashed into the pavement, one of them clogged with earth. The propellers were bent. Gasoline poured into the street. Chaos reigned on Bellevue Avenue. People ran from their homes and raced to the scene. The crowds were met by police and firemen who held them back and rushed to save the crew. But there was no crew to save.
